Seizing the opportunity to advance humane, practical solutions for the real, lived challenges and opportunities that people face.
Dear friends and colleagues,
In a recent post, I suggested that we are living through the breakdown of systems that no longer serve human flourishing. I described how the turbulence we’re experiencing is the result of unraveling of structures that have long resisted more authentic and humane ways of healing and living.
I laid the groundwork and named the opportunity. I affirmed that we are uniquely prepared to help lead the restructuring by guiding others in redirecting their energy toward meaningful, grounded ways of living.
But what I didn’t do was to explain how we can step into this moment.
Inspiration without strategy isn’t enough, so this post is about specifics.
The Opportunity
I suggest that the opportunity we face is embedded in how we answer these questions:
With old systems losing their grip, how do we step up as architects of what comes next?
As resistance to authentic healing wanes, how do we most effectively advance practices that are humane and evidence-based?
As more and more people recognize that what they once relied upon is unstable, unreliable, and untrustworthy, how do we help them reorient and root themselves in authentic resourcing?
Getting Clear & Specific
For the purposes of this discussion, let’s replace terms like service, teaching, training, coaching, clinical work, education, and research with a clarifying phrase: problem solving.
When we think in terms of roles or titles, we can become attached to expectations that are separate from the real world we seek to engage with.
When we think in terms of problem solving, we focus on outcomes. We focus on the real, lived challenges facing real people — and on our opportunity and responsibility to address them effectively.
If we’re serious about increasing our impact, we’re far more likely to be efficient and effective if we get specific about the problems we’re choosing to engage with.
We Each Need Clarity on these Specific Questions
I suggest that we regularly revisit the following seed questions — and that we keep clear, current answers top of mind:
What is a need* you feel genuinely drawn to help address?
Why are you drawn to this particular need?
What do you provide that contributes to addressing it — and what is uniquely yours in that contribution? (Don’t get overly competitive here. This is pointing more to your personal experience, which is always unique.)
What key challenges are faced by those experiencing this need?
What key challenges do you face in helping to address it?
What key opportunities are there for overcoming those challenges — for them and for you?
What is one concrete action you can take right now to increase your potential impact?
Who are at least two other people with whom you already have — or could build — a community for reflection and collaboration around solving this problem?
*The more descriptive we can be in defining how people experience a need, issue, or problem, the more effectively we can align our energy toward meaningful and sustainable action.
Embracing Authenticity Requires Releasing How We Were Taught to Think
You may wish to notice when the voice of the old system arises in your thinking. You know what I’m talking about: thoughts that are competitive, scarcity-driven, or performative, focused on visibility over value, positioning over purpose, comparison over collaboration, optics instead of substance.
They’re bound to arise because we’ve been trained to think in terms of scarcity and hierarchical systems disconnected from humane values. We’ve been told to focus energy on acquiring followers, processing transactions, increasing conversion rates, improving efficiency, and maximizing SEO, compliance, and institutional alignment. We’ve been conditioned to prioritize “scalability” over genuine relationship, policy over discernment, productivity over presence.
I invite you to look directly at the engineered status quo: the failure, the corruption, the immoral business model, the corrupt centralized authority, and the enforced conformity — and to reject it by choosing what is authentic, relational, and good.
Old habits die hard and the external pressures are intense. That’s why our practices are non-negotiable. When we catch our thoughts dropping out of alignment, we gently, deliberately, and persistently re-orient our focus. (This isn’t to imply that we override concerns with forms of “spiritual bypassing” but that we are dedicated to mindfulness and intentional focus — whether the focus is on a positive creation or feeling a difficult emotion.)
With each conscious action — each choice to prioritize integrity and relationship — we participate in rebuilding the world we want to see.
