Bendy Isn’t Better: Teaching Hypermobile Students Safely and Effectively
You’ve seen her in class: folding easily in half, elbows hyperextending in Down Dog, praised for being naturally “good” at yoga. But the same cues that encourage depth and flexibility can work against hypermobile bodies.
With this Workshop Blueprint, you’ll be equipped to deliver a practical, informed session to other providers on joint mobility, hyperextension, and teaching cues that protect hypermobile bodies — without fear-based teaching.

Hyperextension and Hypermobility: Evidence-Based Teaching for Student Safety and Success
This 2-hour workshop is designed for teachers, therapists, and coaches who recognize that hypermobility is more common than studio culture often acknowledges — and who want to teach with that understanding in mind.
We’ll explore what hypermobility actually is, how it differs from joint hypermobility syndrome, and how to choose practices that better support hypermobile bodies. You’ll leave with an increased awareness of what to watch for plus practical teaching tools, including cues for hyperextended knees and elbows, a stabilization-first approach to sequencing, isometric techniques that build strength within flexibility-based poses, and a proprioceptive reset protocol to stabilize lax joints.

Q&A Template
I’m familiar with hypermobility and cue students not to lock their joints. What more do I need to know for typical teaching?
The cue, “don’t lock your joints” is one of the most common cues given to hypermobile students. It’s usually directed at knees and elbows that move into visible hyperextension. However, there’s good reason to consider the cue incomplete or sometimes unhelpful on its own. We’ll dig into those reasons and offer more refined practical teaching approaches. By understanding the underlying causes, compensatory movement patterns, and potential implications of hypermobility, teachers can move beyond relying on a generic cue. This workshop emphasizes experiential learning and effective communication strategies to help students develop greater proprioception, stability, and body awareness without fear-based cueing or overcorrection. You’ll also learn how to select and adapt poses that can work well for all students while more effectively supporting hypermobile bodies through awareness, strength, and sustainable movement patterns.
I trained in X style — will this workshop align with, or contradict, the approach I use?
We will draw from a range of respected voices in yoga anatomy and movement education, including Ray Long, Jules Mitchell, Leslie Kaminoff, and Judith Hanson Lasater. Rather than replacing cueing systems, the workshop adds nuance, context, and adaptability to them. The goal is not to prescribe a single “correct” method, but to help teachers make more informed decisions for a wider range of bodies.
The full lesson covers these additional questions:
Is the workshop evidence-based?
I don’t have many hypermobile students.
Isn’t it safest to recommend that hypermobile students avoid practicing yoga?
This sounds a bit out of scope. I’m not supposed to diagnose conditions.
I think this could help me in my work, but I’m not a yoga teacher. Is it going to be helpful for a non-yoga teacher?
Will there be enough time to go deep enough? I think I’d rather take a longer training.
