What Yoga Teachers Learn After a Teacher Training
Once you complete a yoga teacher training and begin teaching — whether that was in the 1990s, the 2010s, or today — you quickly realize two things: a training is only a starting point, and not all trainings are created equal. You may have had a positive experience or studied in a program that felt thorough and supportive — but many teachers have not.
Over time, it also becomes clear that the idea that Yoga Alliance sets and upholds teaching standards is a longstanding myth. Yoga Alliance does not define or enforce competency-based standards; it is a registry, recognizing teachers and trainers based on paperwork and fee payment.

Of course, we are not suggesting that trainers who are not authorized with us are not also excellent. Many outstanding teacher trainers were doing exceptional work long before we began supporting trainers in 2017. That said, comprehensive, practical written materials of this kind are rarely — if ever — included with teacher trainings outside of our Authorized Trainers.
The broader point is that the widespread misconception that Yoga Alliance registration reflects training quality has contributed to lowered expectations across the field. In contrast, trainers who choose not to rely on minimum requirements — and instead invest in a rigorous, high-quality knowledge framework — demonstrate a clear commitment to going beyond the baseline, while prioritizing their time and energy where it matters most: providing attentive, present, and deeply supportive guidance to their students.
