Planning Ahead: Considerations for January 2026
"The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists, who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood." — Martin Luther King, Jr
“The trailblazers have always been nonconformists”
The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists, who are dedicated to justice, peace, and brotherhood. The trailblazers in human, academic, scientific, and religious freedom have always been nonconformists. In any cause that concerns the progress of mankind, put your faith in the nonconformist!

New Year
The start of a new year is a natural time to take note of what has come before, honor it (as the best you could do at the time, as karma, as a beautiful or difficult experience, or simply as what it was), and to then fully release it to create space for present moment creation.
Goals, Intentions, Resolutions, Sankalpa
See here for support on these teachings:
How intention can work better than resolution: a way to prevent giving up and return to the desired focus.
The process of determining a sankalpa focuses on our goals in a methodical and practical way.
Jan 19th — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “People are not going to be silenced. The truth must be told.”
I’m reminded of a 1967 speech by Dr. King in opposition to the Vietnam War in which he said: “It’s a dark day in our nation when high-level authorities will seek to use every method to silence dissent. But something is happening and people are not going to be silenced. The truth must be told.” In his speech, King also discussed “the triple evils of racism, economic exploitation, and militarism." Those evils don’t go away. Even at the best of times, they fester beneath the surface, always awaiting an opportunity to emerge and seize upon people’s fears and anxieties. At other times, they seem to be the dominant forces in our politics and culture. But it’s up to us to make sure that those times are fleeting, and that the core values that comprise the true American Way — democracy, liberty, equality, and justice for all — serve as the ideals that shape and guide our nation. The extraordinary persistence of the “triple evils” identified by Dr. King means that we must be just as persistent.

Applying Knowledge of Seasons & Cycles
If you’re interested in aligning with natural events but not sure where to start, here are some ways you might engage, starting with simple awareness and progressing through more active involvement as desired.
You can simply become aware of the current natural phenomena. You may begin to make observations and associations with the energy of this phase.
You can go a little deeper by educating yourself on related themes and practices designed to align with the energy. You might experiment with practices on your own or in community.
You might be inspired to incorporate a particular element into your teaching or service work, such as a reading aligned with the theme, or a yoga pose, breathing practice or mantra, for example.
You can design a class or event that is fully aligned with the themes and energy of this phase.
