From Information to Lived Wisdom: Reclaiming the power of your story in an information-saturated world.
A brief, practical reflection on reconsidering the role of knowledge in a data-driven world.
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Here you’ll find a short (but deep) reflection on navigating an information-saturated world. My intention is that it serves as a practical pointer to the power of your personal story, which turns out to be the very portal that grants us the opportunity to serve others.
I’ve spent decades working with information — from combing through microfiche at the public library, to navigating the wild west of the early internet, to decoding today’s ever-changing search algorithms. Through it all, I’ve always believed that information should be used to lift people up, and it should be accessible to anyone looking for the truth. It should never be used to divide or to diminish. This is so core to who I am that I’ve spent the majority of my adult life seeking out the truth, making it accessible, and empowering others with knowledge that is transparent, contextualized, and liberating.
And now, all of a sudden, we’re closer than ever to a true democratization of information — a shift that I find inherently right. But the path to get there is convoluted, messy, and rife with pitfalls. This is an incredibly difficult transition when so many fields are built on specializing in a specific type of knowledge or crafting information in particular ways, such as writing or editing. Beyond that, I’m acutely aware of the gatekeepers pulling the strings on major parts of humanity’s knowledge base and how easily we can become reliant on centralized systems that manipulate information for their own agendas.
In this chaotic landscape, I know for sure we’re being called to prioritize our level of consciousness over the data we accumulate. We know this because we can observe how the same knowledge — neutral at its core — can be used to help or to harm. For example, data about the effect of toxic load on human physiology can be used to develop an effective health strategy or weaponized to breed fear and sell a narrative.
As we endeavor to tap into a higher level of understanding, it seems to me that we’re being asked to reconsider the purpose of knowledge itself. Accurate, contextualized information free from hidden agendas is vital for effective decision-making, but I’m coming to realize its deeper purpose may simply be as a supportive backdrop for our personal journeys and human stories, inviting us to value people for their humanity over the data they hold.
So this brings us to the real meaning here: your humanity and your story matter.
Your story is unique, valuable, and completely yours. The insights you’ve gathered mean everything. If you were suffering with chronic pain following a stressful life change, and it was relieved through breathing and meditation, the knowledge and teachings about those techniques cease to be just information. Your experience becomes a narrative about human possibility and resilience — transforming raw knowledge into personal wisdom, and becoming the unique medicine you offer the world.
If this resonates, I invite you to counter the internet’s hyper-focus on information and consider instead how the knowledge you’re interested in relates to your particular experience. Of course, as you likely know, I’m a strong advocate for backing up your personal journey with contextual knowledge that makes your insights universally powerful and facilitates the conditions for others to have their own positive experience. For instance, the fact that you reversed a chronic illness is deeply inspirational — it’s the spark that makes people care. But when you’re speaking to the people you serve, they’ll benefit from wisdom that draws from a broader context, empowering them with the resources to take action on their own unique path.
Helping you bridge that gap between your story and a thoughtfully resourced, evidence-based offering is exactly what I’m here to do.
My goal is to support you so well that you can lead with absolute confidence as you deliver the “medicine” that you are called share.
Sincerely,
Shelly Thorn
