Accountability is essential (individually and societally), making how we respond to dishonesty the very bedrock of the communities we create. Let’s explore, discuss and put this into practice.
There have been times when people had no choice but to take personal responsibility, as they were accountable not to a system but to their peers. Today, that is rarely the case.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Have you lived in situations where agreements were made with a handshake — no contracts needed? Have you considered how that worked, and what’s different now? As always, the truth is simple, though not always easy: accountability. People had no choice but to take personal responsibility, as they held one another accountable — and today, that is rarely the case.
I’m writing to invite you to hold me — and every other person you encounter — accountable, and to build communities from the ground up with this as a foundation.
Think about what that means when you interact with a representative of an organization — whether it’s a retail store, a utility company, a tech provider, a hospital, or a regulatory agency. Do they answer your questions with an AI bot, a circuitous “help” site, or a “customer service” agent who “completely understands” your frustration but doesn’t have the authority to do what you know needs to be done to uphold reasonable expectations for a fair and just relationship?
Could a foundational act that enables us to rebuild a humane and just society be to demand that truth and accountability be upheld in every situation we encounter?
To me, the answer is undeniable. I propose that truth and accountability can serve as the perfect touchstone — guiding our individual relationships and providing a benchmark for evaluating and renewing society.
Imagine the ripple effects if we consistently demanded truth and held one another accountable. How much healing could result, both individually and societally?
You can test it for yourself. In every interaction, you can choose to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth — and to expect the same of others.
While I’ve built a progressive case below, as always, you are free to skip around to the sections most relevant to you in the moment.
Nothing but the Truth
Close the loopholes.
“The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” is a phrase crafted to eliminate ambiguity and guard against manipulation of information that can obscure reality. It explicitly closes loopholes that can lead to falsehood, omission, or distortion.
The truth: Don’t lie.
The whole truth: Don’t omit relevant facts.
Nothing but the truth: Don’t include misleading or irrelevant information.
This legal formula is used by courts as part of an oath sworn by witnesses before giving testimony.
And what, exactly, is an oath?
Britannica defines it as a sacred voluntary promise with a “penalty of divine retribution for intentional falsity.”
Sacred means very holy; highly valued and important; deserving great respect.
The oath, which thus has its origins in religious customs, has become an accepted practice in modern nonreligious areas, such as in secular legal procedures. A person serving as a witness in court proceedings… often has to swear by the following oath: “I do solemnly swear that the testimony I am about to give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. So help me God.”
The relevance and implications of oaths warrant deeper examination, but I will defer that discussion to focus on the practical role a commitment to truth can play in both personal life and society.
Accountability vs. Selective Enforcement
Every truth matters. Every personal decision and relationship engages us in the process of rebuilding society.
It’s profoundly difficult for regular, kind people to grasp the scale of lying, distortion, and betrayal that have shaped our institutions. Yet due to recent evidence, more people than ever are navigating the process needed to confront and respond to this reality.
Accountability requires that if someone lies or distorts the truth, we address it directly, make it clear that it is unacceptable, seek to understand why it happened, and take steps to prevent it from happening again, which may require both corrective action and consequences.
So why isn’t this happening, and how can we correct it?
In a legal context, knowingly making a materially false statement under oath is perjury, a criminal offense. When intent to deceive can be proven, penalties include hefty fines and imprisonment. But perjury prosecutions are rare. This illustrates selective enforcement, a primary mechanism by which injustice persists — and a key driver of the manipulation that has brought society to its current state.
I am not suggesting you focus on the court system, unless that is your passion. I am suggesting that a healthy society depends on accountability, making our response to dishonesty the very bedrock of the communities we build. Every relationship we have is an opportunity to engage in the process of rebuilding society.
How do you respond when confronted with an outright lie or a misleading statement — from a child, a teenager, a spouse, a colleague, a customer service agent, a politician, a business owner, or a public servant?
Now multiply your answer across thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of such moments with each situation — that is how a collective is formed.
Do we choose to build a collective grounded in truth, or one that allows lies to slide until the world our children inherit is a cesspool of manipulation?
The Vital Import of Risk-Reward
There’s a big difference between information and action. I recommend always consciously acknowledging the risk-reward of the situation at hand.
When I encounter lies or manipulation, I usually cut ties and focus on sources committed to the truth. For example, at the start of this post, I recount a consultation I had in the early 1990s with a medical specialist who poo-poo’d facts relevant to my condition. I didn’t waste time. I declined his testing protocols, politely walked out, and sought a provider who actually cared about the full truth of what works and what doesn’t in restoring health — and had a proven track record of success.
In other words, I place an extremely high value on health and root-cause healing. I consider the risk of engaging with protocols or interventions that ignore key facts to be an absolute non-starter.
By contrast, information gathering carries much lower risk and potentially high reward. In cases where I have no personal relationship with the source — such as a free health information provider or a YouTube creator — I may retain the source if it offers partial truths that have some value. I’ll take the time to parse apart the information provided to get the unique truths I value. But if I can access the same information elsewhere, I stop engaging with them altogether.
The Challenging Reality of Corrupted Systems
Systems transcend the individuals within them, leaving them impotent and without accountability. I see more people realizing this and I hope that awareness grows exponentially in the near future.
One of the trickiest situations we face is trying to hold an individual accountable when, in reality, the system they operate within transcends individuals. It is here that I differ from well-intentioned colleagues and leaders who seek solutions through politics, associations, or regulatory bodies.
I don’t disparage those working within systems. I know they have good intentions, and most of us go through a phase trying to change the system from the inside out. I’ve been there, done that — enough times. PTAs, school boards, non-profit boards, corporations, regulatory bodies… I’ve entered the fray and given my precious energy seeking to ensure our children and families can thrive in a healthy and safe world.
But after what I’ve seen and experienced, I realized that even when we wish for the power of collective systems to work with us, they divert waaaaaay too much energy into unproductive and harmful endeavors. I came to understand that we can be most effective by stepping away from these systems and focusing on what we are truly called to do.
In addition to many decades of independent work and living, I’ve also spent nearly a decade specifically studying how systems and corruption function. As a result, I’ve come to believe that lasting solutions must come from the bottom up — by rebuilding healthy relationships and communities, holding one another accountable, and thereby creating the collective we wish to see.
My Track Record & Commitment
In Malta with one of my sons, exploring ancient healing sites 2021.
I’ve published extensive libraries of resources for providers and truth-seekers. Some ways I strive to uphold a high standard of truth and accountability is by prioritizing approaches that help us:
Lay Strong Foundations — I make the fundamentals of a subject clear and accessible to maximize our ability to think critically and design more advanced applications. This principle is reflected in more than 500 lessons on Wellness Resource Center and Yoga Teacher Central. Here’s an example of why and how to study and teach foundational knowledge.
Gather Evidence — I help us focus on evidence, including n=1 personal experiences and all relevant data. I call out hypotheses that do not account for anomalies and gather evidence that can help us to continuously revise our hypotheses until they hold true across all situations. I remain open to new information and insights and help support others in the same.
Prioritize Intention and Context — When choosing teachings, techniques, or interventions, I make it easier to choose according to intention and context. Decontextualized information can easily divert resources and mislead, so I emphasize understanding the circumstances and purpose behind any guidance or practice.
I invite you to hold me and others accountable and to build communities from the ground up with others who do the same
Sincerely,
Shelly
