Practical Support for Timely Planning
You’ll always have practical support at your fingertips for aligning with timely conditions. For example, let’s say you’re planning how to honor and maximize the energy of a coming New Year. You’ll see this list of ideas for a focus:
New Year Theme Ideas
The start of a new year is a natural time to take note of what has come before, honor it (as the best you could do at the time, as karma, as a beautiful or difficult experience, or simply as what was), and then fully release it to create space for present moment creation.
Other themes might include:
Sangha
Renewal
Discipline / Tapas
If you select a link, you’ll get tools like these…
Sankalpa, Intentions, Resolutions
If you’re thinking about intentions and resolutions, see this lesson, where we clarify the differences between goals, resolutions, intentions and sankalpa, and how this knowledge can positively impact perspective, perception and progress. Get quick access to inspired readings and research. For example:
Intention is Focused on How You are “Being”
[When setting an intention] Your attention is on the ever-present ‘now’ in the constantly changing flow of life. You set your intentions based on understanding what matters most to you and make a commitment to align your worldly actions with your inner values… Through the skillful cultivation of intention, you learn to make wise goals and then to work hard toward achieving them without getting caught in attachment to outcome. Only by remembering your intentions can you reconnect with yourself during those emotional storms that cause you to lose touch with yourself. This remembering is a blessing, because it provides a sense of meaning in your life that is independent of whether you achieve certain goals or not. – Phillip Moffitt, Dharma Wisdom, The Heart’s Intention link
Why Resolutions Don’t Tend to Work, and What Does
Wouldn’t it be great if writing our resolutions also gave us the power, discipline, and determination to achieve our goals? Well, unfortunately it doesn’t… Resolutions do not work for us because more often than not, they include making changes to behavior and objects that exist outside of us. Until we change what’s on the inside, we cannot change what’s on the outside. Eventually, we will go back to making the same choices, whether consciously or unconsciously… If there’s anger, fear, low self-worth, jealousy, resentment, or other negative beliefs inside of us, even if we attempt to change… what comes out will still be what’s on the inside… When we lovingly embrace and accept ourselves, focus our attention on what we want instead of what we don’t want, and set fluid intentions… we are more likely to naturally flow toward choices that are aligned with our goals and achieve our desired results. – Angela Holton, Tiny Buddha, Why Resolutions Don’t Work and How to Create Real, Lasting Change link
Forgiveness
To support a theme of forgiveness as part of letting go of what has passed, choose from more than 20 readings on these aspects of forgiveness:
Attribute of the Strong, The Weak Can’t Forgive
An Act of Creation
Reclaiming of Innocence & the Grand Release
Spiritual Purpose of Betrayal: It Teaches Forgiveness
There is No Peace Without Forgiveness
If You Resent Another, You Are Giving Too Much Power Away & Hurting Yourself
Releases Anger & Resentment…
Tapas (Discipline, Enthusiasm)
You might consider yoga philosophy teachings on tapas — the role of enthusiasm, zeal, effort and self-discipline as a way to burn off impurities and gain courage, wisdom and integrity.
Wheel of the Year, Seasons, Doshas, Moon Phases
See the Timely Resources Hub for foundational considerations including the wheel of the year along with seasons and dosha-balancing. You may also feel connected to moon phases and other observations.
If you’re interested in aligning with natural events but not sure where to start, here are some ways you might engage, starting with simple awareness and progressing through more active involvement as desired.
You can simply become aware of the current natural phenomena. You may begin to make observations and associations with the energy of this phase.
You can go a little deeper by educating yourself on related themes and practices designed to align with the energy. You might experiment with practices on your own or in community.
You might be inspired to incorporate a particular element into your teaching or service work, such as a reading aligned with the theme, or a yoga pose, breathing practice or mantra, for example.
You can design a yoga class or other event that is fully aligned with the themes and energy of this phase.
